This replica faithfully reproduces the look of traditional samurai swords. The handle (tsuka) is lined with faux rayskin and tightly wrapped in black cotton cord (tsuka-ito), ensuring an authentic appearance and a secure grip. The dominant feature is the elaborate metal guard (tsuba) with relief motifs, separating the handle from the blade.

The blade is crafted from high-quality AISI 440 Stainless Steel (X30Cr13) and hardened to 48–52 HRC. Marto has paid close attention to detail, featuring a Hamon line on the edge. While this line is mechanically created rather than through traditional clay tempering, it looks highly authentic and gives the sword the correct character. Uniquely, the scabbard (saya) is made of lacquered aluminum, a modern feature ensuring it will not warp due to humidity and that the sword will always fit perfectly.

Historical Context: The Soul of the Samurai

The katana (literally "sword") as we know it today began to appear during the Kamakura Period (1185–1333). For the samurai, it was not just a weapon but a symbol of social status and personal honour. It was often worn paired with a shorter sword, the wakizashi—this pair was called the Daishō (big and little). While a samurai might set aside other weapons, he guarded his katana as he would his own soul. It is characterized by its curved, slender, single-edged blade and long grip designed for two hands.

Usage and Safety Warning

Please bear in mind that this katana is strictly a decorative item.

• Not for Combat or Cutting: The stainless steel blade is hard but more brittle than spring carbon steel. Striking hard objects carries a risk of snapping the blade.
• Sharpness: The blade comes with a sharp point and edge geometry from the factory, but it is not intended for re-sharpening for practical use.
• Handling: Exercise caution when drawing the sword to ensure safety.

Care Instructions

Thanks to the stainless steel blade and aluminum scabbard, this sword is virtually maintenance-free. Simply wipe the blade occasionally with a dry cloth to remove fingerprints (sweat is acidic). Avoid disassembling the sword unless you have the necessary tools and knowledge.
