Medieval Viking Children's Leather Boots with Side Lacing

Construction and Practical Use

These boots are specifically designed for young participants of historical festivals and costume events. The upper is made from approx. 2mm (approx. 5 oz) thick leather, providing excellent protection and flexibility. The sole, with a thickness of approx. 7mm (approx. 0.28 inches), is attached using a sturdy nailed construction (durchnagel method), which offers superior durability compared to standard turn-sewn shoes. This makes them much more suitable for the energetic play of children.

The side lacing allows for easy adjustment, ensuring the boot stays firmly on the foot even during running or climbing. For a complete Northman look, we recommend pairing these boots with woollen leg wraps (winningas), which provide extra warmth and protection for the lower legs.

Historical Context

The design of these boots is based on archaeological finds from Northern Europe dating between the 9th and 11th centuries. During the Viking Age, shoes were essential items often crafted from single pieces of leather. Finds from excavations in York (Jorvik) and Haithabu show that even children's footwear followed the same functional principles as adult gear. The side-lacing system was a practical solution that avoided the need for expensive metal buckles, making the shoes accessible and reliable for everyday life in a Viking settlement.

Care and Maintenance

Leather is a natural product that requires regular maintenance to stay in top condition. Periodically apply leather balm or dubbin to keep the material supple and water-resistant. If the boots get wet, do not dry them near a heater or open fire, as extreme heat will cause the leather to shrink and become brittle. Instead, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry slowly at room temperature.

Safety Warning: Please note that historical leather soles are sensitive to modern surfaces. Walking on asphalt, concrete, or sharp gravel will significantly shorten the lifespan of the soles. For better grip and longevity, consider having a cobbler add rubber half-soles or using wooden pattens (trippens) on hard surfaces. Be aware that leather soles can be slippery on wet grass or mud.
