Renaissance Leather Rapier Baldric with Hand-Forged Steel Buckles
Historical Context and Evolution of Sword Frogs
Baldrics, which are wide carrying belts worn diagonally across the chest, became immensely popular during the 16th and 17th centuries, corresponding to the Renaissance and Early Baroque periods. Their rise went hand in hand with the proliferation of weapons with very long blades, such as rapiers and smallswords. Carrying such a long weapon on a standard waist belt was highly impractical and often got in the way while walking. Therefore, warriors transitioned to a shoulder-carrying system. This ideally distributed the weight of the heavy hilt and long blade, making drawing the weapon much smoother. This particular model stands out with its ornate hand-forged buckles, which reference the highly developed artistic blacksmithing of the early modern era.
Usage Instructions and Proper Maintenance
The baldric is worn diagonally across the shoulder so that the wide lower frog rests on the opposite hip. The overall length of the main carrying strap can be easily adjusted using the massive forged buckle. The sword scabbard is simply inserted into the lower frog and firmly secured by tightening the five adjustable straps. To maintain the natural flexibility and long lifespan of the leather, we recommend regularly treating the surface with a high-quality beeswax balm. The forged steel buckles are not stainless, so occasionally rub them lightly with oil (e.g., WD40) to prevent corrosion.
Safety and Warnings
Never carry a weapon with a sharp or even a blunt blade in this frog without a sturdy, well-fitting scabbard! A bare blade will not only quickly slice through and destroy the baldric's leather securing straps, but above all, it poses a massive risk of nasty injury to yourself and those around you. Do not dry the baldric near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.
Recommended Accessories and Custom Scabbard
For completely safe and historically accurate carrying, we recommend having a leather scabbard made to the exact measurements of your weapon's blade to accompany this baldric. If you decide on the complete version including the scabbard, you must provide the exact dimensions of your blade in the order notes, specifically: the width and thickness of the blade just below the hilt, the width and thickness of the blade 10 cm (3.94 in) from the tip, and the total length of the blade that the scabbard is to protect (the depth of the scabbard).
