Medieval Knight's Armor-Piercing Lance Head
Detailed Product Description
This lance head is a masterpiece from the smiths at Windlass Steelcrafts. It is crafted from a single piece of high-quality, high carbon steel, which is hand-forged and spring-tempered to ensure maximum strength and resilience.
Blade and Socket
The blade features a triangular cross-section with a hollow ground finish. This design not only reduces the weight of the head for fast and precise handling but also creates an exceptionally strong and sharp point, capable of focusing the entire energy of a thrust into a single point. The long socket ensures a firm and reliable connection to a wooden shaft. At its base, there are pre-drilled holes for securing the head with a rivet or screw.
Build Your Own Lance
One of the greatest features of this product is the ability to assemble your own fully functional lance. Simply purchase a suitable wooden shaft (a 1" diameter dowel works perfectly), which you can find at any local hardware or home supply store. Mount the head onto the shaft and secure it with a rivet or screw through the provided holes. In moments, you will have an impressive historical weapon.
Historical Use and Context
A lance with such a narrow and strong head was primarily the weapon of heavy cavalry—the knights. During the High and Late Middle Ages, as the quality of plate armor continually improved, broad, cutting spearheads became ineffective. This led to the development of these specialized armor-piercing heads. A knight on horseback would hold the lance "couched" under his arm, allowing him to transfer the full momentum of both himself and his galloping horse into the strike. Such an attack could penetrate plate armor and had devastating effects.
An Interesting Piece of History
The "bodkin" point shape, narrow and designed for piercing, was not exclusive to lances. Very similar points were used by English longbowmen on their arrows during the Hundred Years' War, for instance, at the famous Battle of Agincourt (1415). Their purpose was to penetrate the mail and plate armor of the French knights.
Important Notice
Although this lance head is made from high-quality steel and its construction is historically accurate and robust, the manufacturer provides no warranty for its use in battles, stage combat, or HEMA. For this reason, we offer it exclusively as a decorative and collectible item. Please exercise extreme caution during assembly and handling.
Care and Maintenance
Because the head is made of high carbon steel, it is susceptible to rust. Keep it dry. After handling, wipe it with a dry cloth and regularly conserve it with a thin layer of oil (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40) to maintain its shine and protect it from corrosion.
Safety Guidelines
This product is extremely sharp and dangerous. It is not a toy. Keep it out of the reach of children. Always wear protective gloves when mounting it on a shaft and during any further handling. Be fully aware of your surroundings to prevent injury or damage to property.
