The Holy Lance in History
The Holy Lance was the most significant piece of the Imperial Regalia. According to legend, it was the spear used by the Roman centurion Longinus to pierce the side of Jesus. Later, a fragment of a Holy Nail from the True Cross was said to be embedded in its blade. During the Middle Ages, it was believed that the ruler who possessed the lance was invincible. Interestingly, the brass (gold) sleeve seen on this replica was added by Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century to secure the relic and add to its splendor.
Usage and Maintenance
Please note that this is a decorative museum replica and is not intended for practical combat, throwing, or HEMA training.
- Installation: Slide the head onto a wooden shaft (1 inch diameter) and secure it using a nail or rivet through the hole in the socket.
- Maintenance: To prevent rust, wipe the steel parts with a light coat of machine oil (e.g., Ballistol). The brass can be polished with standard metal cleaners.
- Safety Warning: The tip is pointed and the item is heavy. Handle with care to avoid injury to yourself or others. Never point the spear at people or animals.
