Head of a Roman Pilum, Caerleon, made of Hardened High-Carbon Steel

Appearance and Construction

The Pilum Caerleon head is minimalist and functional, just like its historical counterpart. It consists of three main parts: a solid socket for mounting on a wooden shaft, a long and thin shank, and the head itself. The shank tapers towards the tip, giving it an elegant and deadly profile. The entire surface is blackened, which not only protects the steel from corrosion but also gives the weapon an authentic, raw look. The socket at one end has two holes for secure attachment to a shaft with pins or rivets. The head itself is small but very sharp.

History of the Roman Pilum

The pilum was the standard weapon of Roman legionaries from the early Republic to the late Empire. Before making contact with the enemy line, legionaries would unleash a volley of pila. Its design was ingenious. Unlike ordinary spears, the pilum had a long, thin metal shank that would bend or break upon impact with an enemy's shield. This made it impossible for the enemy to reuse and also stuck in the shield, making it much heavier or useless. This forced the opponent to discard the shield, exposing them to the legionaries' attack. Although the pilum seemed to be only a throwing weapon, it was also used in close combat as a spear or short pike.

How to Use This Product

This head is designed to be easily mounted on a wooden shaft to create a fully functional replica of a Roman pilum. You can use it for:

  • Reenactment and Historical Fencing (HEMA): Ideal for portraying a Roman legionary or for training in combat techniques.
  • Collecting: If you are a collector of historical weapons, this head is a great piece for your collection.
  • Decoration: Hung on a wall or placed in a study, it will give the interior a historical and rustic feel.
  • Education: As a visual aid for teaching the history and military of ancient Rome.

Important Notice: This head is made of hardened steel and is very sharp. Especially in practical use, it is essential to follow safety principles to prevent injury or other damage. It is not intended for throwing. Although the materials used, the construction, and the craftsmanship would allow for practical use, the manufacturer provides no warranty. Therefore, we offer this product for purely decorative use only.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure this unique piece serves you well and for a long time, it needs proper care. The steel surface may oxidize over time. To maintain the product's original appearance, we recommend wiping it dry after each use and applying a thin layer of gun oil or another preservative. Store it in a dry environment to prevent corrosion.
