Alexandria Arsenal Sword | Royal Armouries IX.915 | 14th C.
History and Context
Classified as an Oakeshott Type XVI, this style of sword was popular across Europe between 1360 and 1420. It was designed to combat improved mail and emerging plate armour. The blade is broad and powerful in the cut, yet its distinct point allows for effective thrusting. Similar weapons are depicted in contemporary fighting treatises, such as the famous Fior di Battaglia by Fiore dei Liberi (1410).
Craftsmanship and Usage
The sword is precision-forged from 1075 high carbon steel. Despite its imposing blade, it is surprisingly well-balanced thanks to distal tapering and a massive wheel pommel. The long grip, wrapped in red leather, allows for comfortable two-handed use. It comes complete with a wood-core leather scabbard featuring a brass chape with an acorn motif and a leather "rain guard" extending over the crossguard.
Safety Warning: The sword is supplied with a blunt edge (approx. 1 mm) for safety and drilling purposes. While structurally functional and made of high-quality steel, for full-contact heavy sparring (steel-on-steel), we recommend specialised blunt training weapons with thicker edges (2 mm+) to prevent edge damage. This replica is perfect for collectors, historical study, and solo drills.
Care and Maintenance
As this is made from high carbon steel, it requires your care. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every touch or use and apply a layer of oil (such as gun oil or WD40). Treat the leather components with appropriate leather care products. Store in a dry environment to prevent rust.
