Padded Arming Cap with Collar "Mercenary" – Heavy Grey Cotton
Without a quality base layer, even the best helmet is just an uncomfortable piece of metal. This padded hood (arming cap) is the absolute foundation of equipment for any sensible fencer, re-enactor, or LARP warrior. Not only does it cushion impacts and ensure that your chainmail coif or helmet fits snugly without slipping, but it also effectively wicks away sweat and protects your hair from being painfully pulled. Thanks to the extended collar, your shoulders and collarbones get additional protection, which you will especially appreciate when wearing a heavy mail standard or cuirass. Padded Arming Cap with Collar "Mercenary" – Heavy Grey Cotton
Function and Comfort
The cap is made from heavy, durable cotton that can withstand rough handling. The construction is designed to follow the anatomy of the head and neck. There are ties in the front, allowing you to tighten the cap exactly as needed so it doesn't twist during combat. The material is breathable yet thick enough to act as an effective shock-absorbing layer.

Historical Context: Why wear padding?
In the Middle Ages, a simple rule applied: metal on bone hurts. Whether it was a knight in the 13th century in mail armour or a mercenary in the 15th century in a sallet, everyone wore a textile layer under their metal protection. This cap historically corresponds to the padded coif, which served to distribute the kinetic energy of a blow over a larger area. Often, this was the only head protection for poor infantrymen, while for heavy cavalry, it was an essential intermediate layer that prevented concussions and chafing.
Care and Maintenance
Since this is 100% cotton that will be directly against your skin and absorbing sweat, hygiene is important. I recommend washing the cap exclusively by hand in lukewarm water (max 30 °C / 86 °F) using a gentle detergent. Cotton tends to shrink in hot water or a dryer, so never put it in a tumble dryer. Let it air dry, ideally laid flat so it doesn't lose its shape. Once dry, you can "knead" it with your hands to fluff up the padding again.
Recommendation
If you plan to wear this cap under a mail coif, remember that it will slightly increase your head circumference – make sure you have enough room in your helmet. A simple skull cap would be a great addition to wear underneath for even better sweat wicking, or a gambeson to complete your padded armour set.
