Massive Renaissance Two-Handed Sword of Spring Steel with Scabbard

History and Origin of the Two-Handed Swords

Two-handed swords (also widely known as the Zweihänder, Spadone, or Montante) experienced their golden age at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. They were the specialized weapons of elite German and Swiss mercenaries called Doppelsöldner. Fighting in the front lines for double pay, their highly dangerous task was to break through the impenetrable formations of enemy pikemen and halberdiers. The blade of this sword features a highly characteristic element – a ricasso with a fuller, which is an unsharpened section of the blade near the crossguard. This section is typically terminated by parrying hooks (parrierhaken). These hooks not only protected the warrior's hands but also allowed the weapon to be safely gripped directly by the blade (a technique known as half-swording) for better leverage and power in close-quarters combat. Beyond this ricasso, the sword smoothly transitions into a rigid diamond-shaped blade.

Materials, Construction, and Safety Guidelines

The forged blade of this monumental sword is precisely crafted from spring steel. It is expertly hardened and tempered to a highly respectable hardness of 50-55° on the Rockwell scale (HRC). The massive steel crossguard and pommel ensure the proper balance of this heavy weapon. The handle itself consists of a solid wooden core, which is fitted with a leather and wire wrap to provide a secure and comfortable grip. The delivery also includes a custom-made scabbard, which is crafted from wood, covered in leather, and protected by iron fittings.

Because the specifications do not explicitly state that this particular replica is intended and certified for practical combat use (such as full-contact HEMA fencing, stage battles, or cutting tests), we must advise you that, for safety reasons, this is a decorative item unsuitable for practical use. Avoid heavy steel-on-steel impacts to prevent damaging the weapon or causing injury. For proper maintenance of the spring steel, we highly recommend wiping the blade with a thin layer of gun oil after every handling to prevent surface rust.
