Medieval Wooden Spoon – Rustic Feasting
Back to the Roots of Dining
In the Middle Ages, wood was the absolute standard. While metal spoons were the privilege of wealthy burghers and nobility, the common folk, soldiers, and travellers ate with wood. The shape of this spoon is universal and historically accurate for a wide period from the early to the late Middle Ages. The bowl is somewhat shallow, which corresponds to the customs of the time when porridge and thick stews were sipped or eaten in smaller amounts. The handle is ergonomically shaped to provide a good grip even when your fingers are cold.
The surface of the spoon is finely sanded and unvarnished. This is a huge advantage for purists who want to avoid synthetic lacquers. Wood is a natural material that "breathes" and will acquire a beautiful patina over time.
Care for Wooden Utensils
To ensure this piece lasts for years without cracking, you need to treat it with the care that natural material deserves:
- Oiling: Since the spoon is supplied without a finish, I strongly recommend coating it with food-safe oil before the first use (and regularly thereafter). Linseed oil, walnut oil, or even plain olive oil are ideal. The wood will darken, the grain will stand out, and the spoon will become more resistant to moisture.
- Washing: Never, and I mean never put wooden utensils in the dishwasher. Aggressive salts and prolonged soaking would irreversibly destroy it. Wash it with lukewarm water, perhaps with a little mild detergent, and wipe it dry immediately.
- Temperature: Do not put the spoon in the microwave. While wood is durable, extreme temperature fluctuations and long boiling in water are harmful. However, it is perfectly built for hot soup – unlike metal, it won't burn your lips.
This spoon will match perfectly with the wooden bowls from our range. Create a complete dining set that the entire camp will envy.
