Historical Context and Practical Application
While metal buckles became widely used in the High Middle Ages, more practical fastenings prevailed in the Early Middle Ages (especially in the 9th to 11th centuries among Nordic and Slavic tribes). Leather cords, knots, and loops were cheap to produce, easy to repair, and surprisingly strong. The system of an overlapping cuff with decorative cutouts through which the leather straps pass is inspired by historical finds and period iconography. The slightly pointed front makes it easier to move through dense undergrowth and gives the boots an elegant shape. These mid-calf boots are an excellent choice for historical reenactment, stage combat, and fantasy cosplay. For the best historical look and to prevent blisters, we recommend wearing them with thick woollen socks or leg wraps.
Construction and Walking Safety
The base of the footwear is strong and supple cowhide leather, which protects the ankle from sprains on uneven terrain. From a safety perspective, the sole is the key element. Historically accurate smooth leather soles are extremely slippery on today's wet grass, mud, or modern cobblestones, posing a risk of serious injury. For this reason, this model is fundamentally equipped with modern, solid shoe rubber. Thus, you get the authentic look of the upper combined with a safe and stable tread.
Caring for Light Leather
From the workshop, the boots are already treated with a leather balm containing beeswax. However, to ensure they serve you as long as possible, they require maintenance after every demanding event. Clean coarse mud off the boots with a damp cloth and let them dry slowly at room temperature. Never dry them directly by a fire or on a radiator—the leather would irreversibly harden and crack! Subsequently, lubricate the leather with a balm or oil. Please exercise extra caution here: This is light leather, and any oil or balm will permanently darken it upon application, giving it a richer patina. This is a natural process that additionally provides excellent waterproofing against morning dew.
Standard Sizing and Custom Tailoring
We supply the footwear in standard EU sizes. If off-the-rack sizes do not fit you, the boots can be made directly to measure according to your dimensions. The total height of the boot, including the sole, is fixed at approximately 26 cm (10.2 inches) and unfortunately cannot be altered. Important notice: if you wear orthopaedic insoles and choose the custom-made option, it is absolutely essential to send these insoles to us in advance. The manufacturer will place them exactly into the boots so that the resulting footwear fits you like a glove.
