Medieval Suede Leather Cap with Tie Flaps, Black
Historical Context and Use
Simple caps of this type, often called a "coif," were widespread in Europe from the early to the late Middle Ages, with their peak popularity spanning from the 13th to the 15th centuries. For the lower and middle classes, they were the basic form of headwear for everyday use. For soldiers and knights, they served a crucial role as padding under armour. Not only did they increase the comfort of wearing a heavy helmet and help absorb impacts, but they also absorbed sweat and protected hair from being snagged by the rings of a mail coif.
Construction and Material
This leather cap is stitched together from several panels of genuine suede leather, approximately 1.3–1.5 mm thick. This material is soft, pliable, and will conform beautifully to the shape of your head over time. A characteristic feature is its flat, square crown. The extended side panels cover the ears and transition into two long flaps, which can be worn hanging loose or tied under the chin for a more secure fit. Strong machine stitching ensures durability and a long lifespan, even with frequent use.

How to Care for Your Cap
To keep your cap in perfect condition for a long time, proper care for suede leather is necessary. Remove dust and dry dirt with a soft suede brush. Never machine wash or tumble dry the cap. If it gets wet, allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature, away from heat sources like radiators or open fires. To increase its resistance to moisture and dirt, you can periodically apply a suede protector spray.
Please note: This product is made from a natural material. Minor variations in colour tone or leather texture are natural and make each piece unique.
