Spoons Through the Ages
The spoon is one of the oldest eating utensils, older than the fork. Throughout the Middle Ages and the early modern period, spoons made from natural materials like wood or horn were extremely common. Metal spoons (silver, pewter) were often a sign of wealth, but horn was valued for its lightness, durability (it didn't split as easily as wood), and the fact that it didn't transfer a metallic taste, which was ideal for tasting sauces. Owning your own spoon was common; people often carried their own cutlery with them in a pouch on their belt.

How to Care for Your Horn Spoons
To ensure your spoons serve you well for a long time, you must follow a few rules. Horn is a natural material!
Recommended Care:
- Wash the spoons by hand only in lukewarm water with mild soap.
- Dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth immediately after washing.
- They are ideal for cold and lukewarm foods (soups, porridges, salads) and drinks (water, beer, mead).
What to Avoid at All Costs!
- NEVER put them in a dishwasher. The hot water will destroy them.
- NEVER put them in a microwave.
- Do not expose them to extreme heat – do not use them for cooking or for boiling hot foods.
- Do not leave them soaking in water or in highly acidic liquids for long periods.
- Not suitable for drinks with an alcohol content above 20%.
