14th Century Padded Arming Hood with Collar, Ecru

Construction and Design

Comfort and Functionality in One

The hood is crafted from a durable yet breathable cotton canvas in a natural, unbleached (ecru) colour. It consists of two main parts – the cap itself, which covers the head, and a wide collar that protects the shoulders and upper chest and back. The entire surface is meticulously quilted. The central panel of the hood features vertical quilting, while the side panels and collar are adorned with diamond-patterned quilting. This stitching not only looks great but, more importantly, keeps the internal padding in place and enhances its protective function. At the front of the neck, there is practical lacing with fabric eyelets, allowing you to perfectly adjust and securely fasten the hood.

For Battle, LARP, and Fairs

This padded arming cap is the ideal choice for a wide range of occasions. Whether you're heading to a historical reenactment, a LARP event, HEMA training, or simply want to complete your costume for a medieval fair, this piece of gear will provide you with an authentic look and essential functionality. It is the foundational layer that should be worn under any helmet, be it a bascinet, great helm, or sugar loaf.

The Hood in the Mirror of History

In the 14th century, with the development of plate armour, padded and quilted undergarments became absolutely crucial. Unlike the simpler coifs of earlier periods, this type with an integrated collar provided superior protection for the neck and shoulders. It often served as the base to which a mail aventail was attached with leather straps, protecting the neck and face—a defining feature of high medieval knightly armour.
