Antique Brass Thracian Gladiator Helmet with Griffin Crest

Historical Legacy of the Thraex

This massive helmet was worn by a specific class of gladiators known as Thracians (Thraex), who were among the absolute favourites in the amphitheatres and traditionally fought against the Murmillo gladiator class. They typically fought wielding a short, wickedly curved sword (sica) and a small rectangular or square shield (parmula). Our meticulously crafted model is a precise copy of the famous original discovered in the ash-buried ruins of Pompeii following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The striking brass crest featuring an intricate griffin motif was by no means just for show; its primary tactical purpose was to safely deflect and absorb lethal downward blows aimed at the warrior's head.

Practical Use and Combat Safety

This helmet represents an absolutely excellent choice for authentic Roman reenactment, stage performances, or action-packed LARP events. Although the faceplate and the bowl provide massive protection for your head, we must explicitly warn you that for safety reasons, it is not designed for full-contact heavy armoured combat sports such as Buhurt or HMB. Sustaining heavy blows from blunt polearms or maces would inevitably deform the brass construction. A comfortable padded cotton coif is generously included in the package, and we strongly recommend wearing it underneath the helmet at all times to maximise shock absorption, ensure a snug fit, and improve overall wearing comfort. To put the helmet on, simply open the hinged faceplate, which is securely fastened by removable metal pins.

Care and Maintenance Guide

The entire helmet is crafted from solid brass, a noble metal that naturally oxidises over time and develops a rich, authentic historical patina. However, if you wish to maintain its brilliantly polished golden shine for years to come, we recommend treating the exterior regularly with a soft cloth and a specialised brass polishing paste. The interior bowl is painted black to protect the surface against moisture and sweat. Nevertheless, we advise you to thoroughly wipe the inside dry with a clean cloth after every demanding use.

Recommended Gladiator Accessories

To achieve the ultimate, awe-inspiring look of a true Thracian gladiator, we highly recommend pairing this magnificent helmet with a curved Thracian sica sword, a padded arm guard (manica), and the characteristic high leg greaves (ocreae).
