This helmet draws its historical design from 1st-century BC Murmillo and Thraex gladiator helmets used during the Late Roman Republic. The iconic fish crest (giving the Murmillo its name—from Greek mormyros, a sea fish) and decorative reliefs added dramatic flair for audience recognition. This helmet is named in honor of Spartacus, the legendary Thracian warrior and gladiator from the ludus of Batiatus in Capua.
