In the 1st century AD, this helmet style served as the primary head protection for Roman infantrymen (legionarii). The wide sloping neck guard protected against overhead blows, the frontal peak deflected facial strikes, and the hinged cheek guards shielded the face without obstructing vision or breathing. The crown features mounting points for a brass crest holder (crista) worn by optionis and centurions. Please note that the crest and crest holder are not included.
