Technical Details and Construction
This gladiator helmet is forged from mild steel with an impressive thickness of 4 mm (0.16"), making it an extraordinarily sturdy piece of armour. The patinated finish provides the seasoned look of an artefact that has survived many a clash in the amphitheatre. Historical Context and Usage
The helmet is inspired by the character Crixus from popular cinematic portrayals of the Spartacus revolt. Typologically, it draws from the Murmillo or Thraex styles, characterised by a wide brim protecting the neck and shoulders and a fully enclosed visor. In Ancient Rome, the gladiatorial games (munera) were not merely cruel spectacles but rituals of martial virtue. Each gladiator class had specific equipment that defined their fighting style. This helmet symbolises the status of a champion – it is ornate, intimidating, and technically advanced.
Maintenance and Care
As this product is made of steel which can succumb to corrosion if stored improperly, we recommend keeping the surface dry. After each use, especially if it has been in contact with sweat, wipe the interior and exterior with a dry cloth. Periodically apply a thin layer of protective oil to the metal parts. The horsehair can be gently tidied with a wide-toothed comb to maintain its impressive volume.
