Agincourt Knightly Sword | Royal Armouries IX.16 | 15th C.
History and Context
Dated to circa 1400–1430, this sword hails from a time when mail was being supplemented and replaced by full plate armour. To prevail, a knight needed a weapon capable of "half-swording" and delivering precise thrusts into armour gaps. This sword achieves this with a unique blade construction featuring three distinct cross-sections: a blunt ricasso with a fuller near the guard, transitioning to a hexagonal section, and finally flattening into a diamond section towards the point. This creates a stiff spine, ideal for thrusting but still formidable in the cut.
Craftsmanship and Usage
This replica is hand-forged from modern 1080 high carbon steel, fully tempered and distally tapered for optimal weight distribution. Despite its robust appearance, the sword is surprisingly nimble. The leather-wrapped grip and octagonal scent-stopper pommel allow for comfortable two-handed use. It comes complete with a wood-core leather scabbard featuring a "rain guard" (leather extending over the crossguard) and a brass chape with a decorative cut-out.
Safety Warning: The sword is supplied with a dull edge (approx. 1 mm). While structurally functional and suitable for drills, forms, and light contact, we recommend specialised blunt weapons with thicker edges (2 mm+) for full-contact heavy sparring (steel-on-steel) to prevent edge damage.
Care and Maintenance
High carbon steel is not stainless. To preserve this piece, wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every touch and apply a layer of oil (e.g., gun oil or WD40). Treat the leather components with natural leather care products. Store in a dry environment.
Recommended Accessories
A period-accurate leather sword belt or frog is recommended to carry this magnificent weapon securely.
