Medieval Klappvisier Bascinet: 14th Century Knightly Helmet

Construction and Historical Context

The bascinet was the dominant helmet of European knighthood throughout the 14th century. This replica represents the variant with a so-called Klappvisier (folding visor). Unlike side-pivot visors, this one is attached by a single sturdy hinge in the middle of the forehead. This design was extremely popular in German lands for its robustness and the ability to completely remove the visor by simply pulling out the securing pin.

The helmet skull is made of mild steel with a thickness of approximately 1.6 mm (16 gauge), ensuring high resistance to damage. The surface is polished, which facilitates maintenance and improves rust resistance. Along the bottom edge of the helmet, there are brass pins called vervelles. These are used to attach a chainmail aventail (camail), which historically protected the warrior's neck and shoulders (aventail is not included).

Comfort and Combat Use

The helmet is designed to provide you with maximum safety and comfort:

  • Vision and Breathing: The visor features rectangular eye slits and numerous circular holes for ventilation, which you will appreciate during prolonged wear.
  • Visor Security: A leather strap with a buckle at the bottom secures the visor against the helmet, preventing accidental opening during combat.
  • Internal Liner: The helmet comes with a stitched padded fabric liner that cushions impacts and ensures a snug fit.
  • Chin Strap: An adjustable leather chin strap holds the helmet firmly in place even during vigorous movement.

Safety Warning: Although the helmet is made of high-quality 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel, which is standard for historical fencing and reenactment, for full-contact sports like Buhurt (HMB/BotN), we recommend consulting the specific rules of your organization. Buhurt often requires thicker steel (2 mm / 14 gauge or more). For standard stage combat, HEMA training, and battles, this protection is generally sufficient. Do not forget to wear a padded arming cap under the helmet to increase impact absorption.

Care Instructions

Since the helmet is made of steel which is prone to rust, it is essential to keep it dry. Wipe off sweat and moisture with a dry cloth after each use. For long-term protection, apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., mineral oil or gun oil). Treat the leather parts regularly with a leather conditioner to prevent cracking. Store the helmet in a dry place.

To complete your armour, we recommend purchasing a chainmail aventail to attach to the vervelles, and a quality padded arming cap for maximum comfort.
