Historical use
With the rise of rapiers and smallswords as favoured personal weapons among nobility, gentry, and soldiers during the Renaissance and Early Modern periods (approx. 16th-18th centuries), the need arose for more sophisticated carrying systems for these often long and slender blades. Three-buckle and multi-strap hangers allowed for a secure yet adjustable fit for the scabbard, often carrying the weapon at a specific angle for comfort and a swift draw. They were typical for duellists, musketeers, officers, and civilian gentlemen of the era.
Modern use
Today, this type of hanger is an ideal choice for:
- Reenactment and LARP: Perfect for characters from the Renaissance, Baroque, or Musketeer eras who use rapiers, smallswords, or similar blades.
- Historical Fencing: For carrying rapiers and smallswords at events focused on Renaissance and Baroque fencing styles.
- Cosplay and Theatre: An indispensable accessory for costumes of nobles, duellists, pirates, or fantasy characters inspired by these periods.
- Themed Events: Excellently complements your attire at historical markets, fairs, or balls.
A note from history
The development of complex rapier hangers was closely linked not only to functionality but also to fashion. The manner in which a smallsword or rapier was carried was part of one's social standing and elegance. Hangers were often richly decorated and became an important part of gentlemen's attire, signalling status and readiness to defend one's honour.
Care and storage
- Leather: As this is genuine leather, avoid contact with excessive moisture. Regularly wipe off dust with a soft cloth. Clean any stains carefully with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry immediately. Occasionally, you can treat the leather with a conditioner or leather wax.
- Fittings: Keep the brass parts dry.
- Storage: Store in a dry place, ideally hanging or lying flat to maintain its shape and prevent damage to the leather.
