Box Chape for Belts, 15th Century, Polished Brass, incl. Rivets

A Mark of Status and Elegance

In the 15th century, during the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods, great emphasis was placed on the details of attire. A belt was not just a practical necessity but also an important fashion accessory and an indicator of social status. Metal fittings, such as buckles and chapes, were often richly decorated. This type of chape represents a clean and elegant form that was very popular. Its main function was to ensure that the long end of the belt hung properly along the body and to protect the leather, which was a valuable material at the time.

Simple and Secure Installation

Attaching this chape is straightforward and creates a very strong fitting.

  1. Trim the end of your leather belt (up to 1.75 cm wide and 3.5 mm thick) to a straight edge.
  2. Slide the chape onto the end of the strap so that it fits snugly.
  3. Using a thin awl or a pencil, mark the points for the rivets on the leather through the holes in the chape.
  4. Remove the chape and punch or drill holes of approx. 2.5 mm in diameter through the leather at the marked spots.
  5. Slide the chape back on, align the holes, and insert the included rivets.
  6. Place the front (visible) side of the chape on a soft but firm surface (e.g., a piece of wood) to avoid scratching the polished surface. Using a light hammer, gently peen the ends of the rivets on the back until they are secure.

Maintaining the Golden Shine

Polished brass is beautiful, but over time it can oxidise in the air and develop a patina. If you wish to maintain its brilliant shine, we recommend polishing it from time to time with a soft cloth and any standard brass cleaning product. Do not use abrasive materials that could scratch the surface.
