This type of weapon, generally known as a cup-hilt rapier (also called Taza), experienced its greatest boom during the first half of the 17th century, especially between 1620 and 1660 in Spain and France. It was an integral part of the attire of noblemen and officers. The closed cup hilt provided excellent protection for the hand against the dangerous thrusting attacks that were typical of the fencing schools of the time. This specific model is made in honour of Jean-Armand du Peyrer, the famous Count de Tréville, who went down in history as the brave and honourable commander of the French Royal Musketeers under King Louis XIII. The richly decorated shield on the cup with its heraldic cross references the pride and affiliation with the elite military orders of that era.

The weapon is carefully manufactured in the renowned Spanish workshops of the city of Toledo, famous for its centuries-old tradition in metalworking. The blade is made of high-quality AISI 420 stainless steel, which guarantees its longevity and high resistance to corrosion. The hilt is a masterpiece of mixed materials. The magnificent cup is cast from hard pewter and finished in an attractive black-and-gold design. The long crossguard, terminating in detailed lion heads, is made of a sturdy Zamak alloy. The elegant grip is covered with black leather and inlaid with decorative wire. The entire composition is completed by a massive aluminium pommel, which is also decorated with a heraldic motif.

This rapier is completely unsuitable for any practical use, be it Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), stage combat, LARP, or contact training techniques. Although the stainless steel blade is blunt, its point can be dangerous if handled carelessly. The construction of the hilt, made from light metal alloys, is not designed to absorb the shocks of clashing with another weapon. Attempts at real combat would lead to the destruction of the weapon and could cause serious injury to yourself or those around you. Never use the weapon to strike or thrust at any targets.

Care and Maintenance Instructions

To ensure this musketeer rapier brings you joy for as long as possible and retains its exhibition lustre, it requires minor but regular care. It is advisable to occasionally wipe the stainless steel blade with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. We recommend lightly treating the metal parts of the cup and crossguard with a thin layer of gun preservation oil, which will extend the life of the surface finish. Never use abrasive cleaners, wire wool, or harsh metal polishes, which could irreversibly destroy the decorative patina and golden painting on the hilt.
