Historical Context and Symbolism

This sword is inspired by the armoury of the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, widely known as the Knights Templar, dating back to the 12th to 14th centuries. Although historical original Crusader swords (typologically corresponding to the early forms of the Oakeshott classification, such as types Xa or XI) were much plainer and strictly functional, this piece represents a beautiful, romanticised celebration of their legacy. It is constructed in honour of Hugues de Payens, the French knight who co-founded and became the very first Grand Master of this powerful order. On the meticulously detailed hilt, you will find the classic signs of the order: the typical red cross, the famous seal with two riders on a single horse, and the Latin inscription SIGILLVM MILITVM XPISTI (Seal of the Soldiers of Christ) on the wheel pommel.
