Set of 2 Brass Spoons, typical for 14th-15th Century
Authentic Dining
These medieval spoons are ideal for any historical feast, whether you're at a re-enactment, LARP event, or simply enjoying a historically-styled dinner. They are fully functional and designed for regular dining. Thanks to the brass material, they are more resistant to corrosion than iron spoons and easier to maintain. Their design is typical of the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods.
History of the Spoon
Spoons of this type were common in Europe during the Late Middle Ages (c. 1300-1500). While the poorer classes of the population often used wooden or pewter spoons, brass cutlery represented an affordable "luxury" for townspeople and the lower nobility. The shape gradually evolved – the bowl became slightly wider compared to the early Middle Ages, taking on a teardrop shape. The handle was often faceted, like this model, and ended in a simple point, an acorn finial, or another decorative element.
Care Instructions
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It is its natural property to oxidise and darken (develop a patina) over time when exposed to air. This is not a flaw; on the contrary, it adds to the authentic look. If you want to keep the spoon permanently shiny, it needs regular polishing. Standard brass cleaners or traditional methods like lemon juice with salt will work for this. After each use, wash the spoons in warm water with regular washing-up liquid and dry them thoroughly immediately. NEVER wash them in a dishwasher; the aggressive detergents and high temperatures would permanently damage the surface.
The set pairs perfectly with our other replica historical tableware, such as wooden bowls (e.g., SKU 1916001000) or ceramic cups.
