Black Renaissance Leather Rapier Baldric with Ornate Buckle

A Piece of History on Your Shoulder

During the 16th and 17th centuries, in the dramatic era of the Renaissance and the Thirty Years' War, baldrics became enormously popular across all European battlefields. Originally, these wide over-the-shoulder belts were used to carry heavier loads, such as military drums. However, soldiers and swordsmen quickly discovered that hanging a heavy sword or rapier over the shoulder was much more comfortable than carrying it on a standard waist belt. The weight of the weapon is better distributed, it doesn't get in the way when walking, and drawing the weapon is much smoother. This particular model reflects Italian elegance coupled with the cold functionality of a mercenary's life.

Correct Use and Adjustment

The baldric is worn cross-body over the chest, usually over the right shoulder so that the weapon rests on the left hip for easy drawing with the right hand (left-handers can, of course, reverse this). The carrying strap is fully adjustable thanks to the massive decorative buckle, so you can easily adapt it to your height and layers of clothing. The lower part of the hanger is cleverly widened and divided into four narrow straps fitted with brass rivets. These straps serve to securely and firmly attach the scabbard. By shortening or lengthening these straps, you can precisely fix the scabbard of your rapier regardless of its width.

Carrying swords or rapiers with completely bare blades is unsafe and harmful to the weapon itself, as it is exposed to moisture and damage. If you do not yet have a scabbard, we can make a custom leather scabbard tailored to your blade to go with this baldric. Simply provide us with the following parameters of your weapon in the order notes:

  1. Width and thickness of the blade right at the hilt (guard).
  2. Width and thickness of the blade 10 cm (4 inches) from the tip.
  3. The length of the blade to be protected by the scabbard (total internal depth of the scabbard).

Technical Parameters of the Product

Strap Material Smooth cowhide (genuine leather)
Leather Thickness up to 3.5 mm / 0.14 inches
Standard Total Length approx. 160 cm / 63 inches (adjustable)
Weight approx. 500 g / 1.1 lbs
Buckle and Fittings Material Cast metal with brass/bronze finish
Historical Period Renaissance, 16th - 17th century

Note: Because the product is handmade from purely natural leather, slight variations in colour and surface texture may occur. These minor nuances are a natural characteristic of leather, do not detract from functionality in any way, and make each piece truly unique.

Leather Care and Safety

To ensure that your baldric serves you reliably for many years and retains its strength, we recommend treating it regularly with a high-quality leather conditioner or beeswax. This will keep the leather supple and moisture-resistant. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, open fire), as it could harden and crack. From a safety perspective, remember that this is an accessory designed for carrying weapons – never use it as climbing gear, a rappelling harness, or for towing heavy loads, as it is not designed for such purposes.

We highly recommend purchasing a period-accurate Renaissance rapier or an elegant sword from our range to accompany this baldric, creating a completely perfect and historically faithful set.
