13th Century Knightly Arming Sword with Wheel Pommel

Sword class C, NO WARRANTY!

Construction and Appearance

The sword is constructed with an emphasis on historical fidelity and functionality within its category. The blade is forged from high carbon steel and is heat-treated (tempered) to achieve optimal flexibility. A distinctive feature is the wide central fuller (approx. 63.5 cm / 25 inches), which lightens the blade and shifts the point of balance closer to the crossguard, improving the weapon's maneuverability.

The hilt consists of a straight crossguard and a classic wheel pommel, both made of mild steel (consistent with historical originals, which often used softer iron for the hilt). The grip features a wooden core wrapped in black leather and has risers for a better hold. The entire construction is joined in the traditional manner – the blade tang passes through the entire handle and is peened over the pommel. The package includes a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard with a steel throat and chape.

Usage and Safety (Class C)

This sword falls into Class C of the classification for historical fencing weapons. This means it is intended for:

  • Practicing techniques without hard contact (shadow fighting, drills).
  • Stage combat and theater (choreographed fights with controlled strike force).
  • Costume purposes (LARP, reenactment, photoshoots).

Important Warning: Although the sword has a blunt edge (approx. 2.3 mm) and a rounded tip for greater safety, it is not intended for full-contact combat, buhurt, or forceful striking against hard targets. Such use risks damaging the blade (notches, breakage) and voiding the warranty. Always prioritize your safety and that of those around you.

Historical Context: Oakeshott Type XII

According to Ewart Oakeshott's typology, this sword can be classified within the broad family of Types X to XIV, most closely resembling Type XII, which was dominant in Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries. The wheel pommel was not just an aesthetic element; it served as a counterweight allowing the knight to quickly change the direction of a cut, and in close-quarters combat ("half-swording"), it was used as a striking surface to stun an opponent wearing a helmet.

Sword Care

To ensure the sword serves you well for a long time without rusting, it requires regular care. After each use (even after simply touching the blade with bare hands), wipe the metal parts with a dry cloth and apply a thin layer of preservative oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). Do not store the sword in the scabbard for long periods, as the leather can trap moisture, leading to blade corrosion. Store it in a dry environment.

We recommend that you also acquire a high-quality leather belt or sword frog to complete your costume.
