Roman Centurion Helmet, Imperial Gallic 'G', with Red Crest
Step into the role of a fearless Roman commander with this magnificent replica of the Imperial Gallic 'G' helmet! This helmet type, used in the 1st century AD, is a symbol of the power and discipline of the Roman legions. Our replica, crafted from polished steel and adorned with gleaming brass details, faithfully follows historical finds such as the famous piece from Mainz-Weisenau. The helmet's dominant feature is its massive, detachable transverse crest (crista transversa), made from genuine horsehair dyed a deep red. Roman Centurion Helmet, Imperial Gallic 'G', with Red Crest
A Faithful Replica for a True Commander
This helmet has been constructed with meticulous attention to historical detail. The bowl of the helmet is made from approximately 1.2 mm thick steel. It is decorated with typical brass elements, such as riveted rosettes, edging, and distinctive reinforcing "eyebrows" that served to strengthen the design and deflect blows aimed at the face. The helmet is equipped with large, hinged cheek guards (bucculae) and a wide neck guard, which provided excellent protection. Inside, there is an adjustable leather suspension liner for a comfortable and secure fit on the head.
History Forged in Steel: The Imperial Gallic 'G' Helmet
The term "Imperial Gallic" was introduced by the historian H. Russell Robinson to distinguish helmets made by Celtic craftsmen in Gaul from "Italic" types. These helmets, derived from Celtic designs, became standard issue for legionaries in the early Empire. The 'G' model was particularly widespread in the 1st century AD, and legionaries wore it in key conflicts such as the conquest of Britain and the suppression of Boudica's rebellion in 61 AD.
A Symbol of Authority: The Centurion's Transverse Crest
While rank-and-file legionaries wore their crests (if at all) in a fore-and-aft orientation, the transverse crest (crista transversa) was the exclusive mark of a Centurion. In the chaos of battle, this prominent feature allowed his men to easily identify their commander's position, follow his orders, and rally to him. The crest on this replica is fitted into a brass holder and can be easily removed for transport or cleaning.
