9th Century Viking Hand Axe – Carbon Steel & Ash Wood with Leather Wrap

Design and Materials

The heart of the axe is its carbon steel head, finished with a blackened patina that gives it an authentic, forged look while offering some corrosion resistance. The bearded shape (reminiscent of the historical Skeggöx) allows for powerful chopping as well as finer work when choked up close to the head.

The handle is crafted from Ash wood. Historically, Ash was the preferred timber for weapon shafts and tools due to its flexibility and ability to absorb shock without snapping. For a secure grip—even with wet gloves or sweaty palms—the handle is wrapped along its length with genuine leather. The cross-wrapping is not just aesthetic; it provides essential friction and control.

Usage and Safety

This axe comes with an edge thickness of approx. 1.1 mm (0.04 inches) and is ground to a functional edge. This makes it excellent for:

  • Camping and Bushcraft: Splitting kindling, limbing branches, or building shelters.
  • Costume & LARP: With the included sheath, it can be safely worn on a belt to complete a Viking look (Note: strict prop use only, not for combat!).
  • Historical Display: Perfect for demonstrating period crafts and tools.

Warning: Due to the sharp edge and construction, this is NOT a safe weapon for contact sparring or re-enactment fighting. Using it against a person could cause serious injury.

Historical Context

In the Viking Age (approx. 8th–11th centuries), the axe was the most common tool and weapon. Unlike expensive swords, almost every free man owned an axe. It served primarily for farm work and shipbuilding but became a deadly weapon during raids. The "bearded" design allowed a warrior to hook an opponent's shield and pull it away, exposing them to a follow-up strike.

Care Instructions

Carbon steel is an excellent material that holds an edge well, but unlike modern stainless steel, it requires maintenance. To prevent rust, clean and oil the blade after every use (standard gun oil or vegetable oil if used on food will suffice). The wooden handle and leather parts should be treated occasionally with beeswax or leather balm to prevent them from drying out and cracking. Store in a dry place, ideally out of the sheath if storing for long periods.

Safety Warning: Class C according to the classification of re-enactment weapons. This product has a sharp edge and is not intended for contact fencing or stage combat. Use at your own risk. More information on classification can be found here.
