Appearance and Construction: A Masterpiece by Pavel Leier

The "Theowert" is an imposing sword with an overall length of 119 cm (approx. 46.9 in). Its dominant feature is the long, straight, double-edged blade, 90.5 cm (approx. 35.6 in) in length, featuring a 60 cm (approx. 23.6 in) long fuller that contributes to balance and reduces weight. The blade tapers evenly to a sharp point and has a profile optimized for both cutting and effective thrusting.

The steel guard, 21.5 cm (approx. 8.5 in) long, has an elegant shape with arms (quillons) slightly curved towards the blade, typical of later medieval swords. The extended grip, 21.5 cm (approx. 8.5 in) long, allows for comfortable one- or two-handed use. It consists of the steel tang, overlaid with wood and wrapped with a twisted pair of wires for a secure hold. The sword is finished with a distinctive, faceted steel pommel with a maximum width of 8.5 cm (approx. 3.3 in), its shape reminiscent of a triangular perfume stopper, which ensures the weapon's proper balance and finishes the grip. The total weight of the sword (blunt version) is 1876 g (approx. 4.14 lbs). Every element testifies to the meticulous work and attention to detail of blacksmith Pavel Leier.

Historical Classification: A Late Medieval & Early Renaissance Sword

With its design – the long, slender blade optimized for both cut and thrust, extended grip, downward-curving guard (reminiscent of Oakeshott Style 8), and characteristic faceted pommel (similar to Oakeshott Types T or V) – the "Theowert" strongly evokes the era of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance (approximately 14th–15th centuries). These so-called "bastard swords" or "longswords" were popular during the development of plate armour. Its blade shape could correspond to Oakeshott Types XVa or XVIIIa. Thanks to Pavel Leier's experience, this replica is a faithful reflection of historical examples.

Material and Craftsmanship: Czech Blacksmith Quality

The blade is forged from proven ČSN 14260 spring steel, oil-hardened to approximately 47 HRC, and then tempered to achieve optimal toughness – a standard procedure in Pavel Leier's workshop, guaranteeing high quality. It is important to remember that this steel is not stainless and therefore requires regular care (cleaning and oiling). The pommel and guard are also steel (cast), precisely finished.

Variants and Usage: From Collector's Item to HEMA Longsword

You can acquire the "Theowert" in two versions:

  • Sharp Version: Suitable for collection purposes, as a decoration, or for training cutting techniques (tameshigiri) – requires utmost caution and experience!
  • Blunt Version (Class B): An ideal choice for historical and stage combat. The blade edge is thickened to 2-3 mm, and the tip is safely rounded. This variant is perfect for contact fencing, HEMA (longsword combat), late medieval re-enactment battles, theatre, or as part of an elaborate costume. With a point of balance approximately 5 cm (approx. 2.0 in) from the guard, it offers excellent handling.

Safety Guidelines and Care for Your Hand-and-a-Half Sword

Safety must always come first.

  • You use the sword entirely at your own risk. We are not responsible for any injuries or damages caused by the sword.
  • Correct technique is key: Execute cuts in a controlled manner, without unnecessary brute force. Avoid direct edge-on-edge blows – parry with the flat of the blade to prevent damage.
  • Inspection before use: Always inspect the sword. Nicks on the blade's edge from normal use are standard, but it's good to smooth them out occasionally (with a diamond file or sandpaper) so they don't become too sharp. This wear and tear is not a reason for a warranty claim.
  • Steel care: Remember that the steel is not stainless. After each use, especially after contact with bare hands, clean the blade thoroughly and conserve it with weapon oil.
  • Possible loosening: Over time, the guard on swords may become slightly loose. This can be addressed by tightening or re-peening the pommel, or by repairing a soldered joint. Temporarily, wrapping the gap at the guard with strong fishing line can help.
  • Store safely: The sword definitely does not belong in the hands of children – store it out of their reach!

Warranty for Your Hand-Forged Sword

We provide a statutory 2-year warranty for proven material defects. The warranty does not cover breakage or other damage caused by improper handling or normal wear and tear from fencing.

The "Theowert" from Pavel Leier's workshop is an excellent choice for fencers specializing in the longsword, participants in late medieval re-enactment events, and collectors seeking a representative piece with historical significance and quality from a renowned blacksmith.
