The falchion, frequently referred to as a malchus in German-speaking regions, is a single-edged cold weapon that was highly favoured in the late Middle Ages, particularly by archers, pikemen, and other light infantrymen. Thanks to its broader blade, the sword was renowned for its devastating cutting capabilities. In terms of historical typology, this model is closely related to the slightly curved, single-edged sidearms popular in the 14th and 15th centuries. This specific piece is named in honour of Sir Robert Knolles, an English knight and famous mercenary commander during the Hundred Years' War. Knolles began his military career as a humble archer and rose to become one of the most feared tacticians of his time. Much like his career, this falchion marries simple infantry efficiency with a highly professional, lethal impact.

Weapon Construction and Safe Usage

This fencing sword is classified as a Class C weapon, meaning it is primarily intended for stage combat and public battle reenactments. The blade is meticulously forged from high-quality 55Si7 spring steel (equivalent to EN45 standard) and features a full tang construction, securely peened over the pommel. The striking edge is slightly rounded and blunted to a thickness of approximately 2 mm (0.08 inches), and the tip is completely rounded to minimise the risk of piercing or severe injury during combat practice. However, bear in mind that this is still a heavy steel tool. Always approach combat responsibly, use appropriate protective armour, and avoid full-force strikes to unprotected parts of your opponent's body or harsh edge-on-edge blocks, which can lead to material chipping (burrs). The weapon is not built for extreme power fighting like full-plate buhurt tournaments.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure this falchion serves you reliably for a long time, it requires regular care. The spring steel used is not rust-proof. After each use, the blade must be cleaned of sweat and moisture and preserved with a thin layer of gun oil. The grip is formed of hardwood and wrapped in genuine bovine leather, and the included custom-fitted scabbard is also made from real leather. You should occasionally treat these leather elements with a quality beeswax-based leather balm to prevent the material from drying out and cracking. Never expose the weapon to an open flame or attempt to heat-treat it yourself, as this would irreversibly destroy the steel's tempering.
