Historical Context and Proper Use

Single-edged weapons, such as the messer (known in German lands as the Langes Messer or Großes Messer) and falchions, experienced a massive boom from the 13th to the 16th century. They became a popular sidearm not only for common foot soldiers and mercenaries but gradually found their way to the bourgeoisie due to their devastating cutting power and versatility in self-defence. In order to carry such a weapon safely at one's side and prevent it from rusting, a high-quality leather scabbard with a functional belt suspension was an absolute necessity.

This model is very easy to put on thanks to the fully integrated belt, which fastens using sturdy buckles made of hand-forged mild steel. Because this is a custom-made product, it is essential for its manufacture that you send us a 1:1 scale paper outline of your blade by post. In the order notes, you must also state your exact waist circumference measured over the costume you intend to wear the belt with. The weapon shown in the illustrative photograph is for demonstration purposes only and is not included with the scabbard.

Leather Care and Safety Instructions

Leather is a living natural material and requires regular care to maintain its flexibility and longevity. We recommend regularly treating the scabbard and belt with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in a downpour on your campaign, always let the scabbard dry slowly and naturally at normal room temperature. Absolutely avoid drying it near an open flame, on a radiator, or in direct sunlight. The heat would irreversibly dry out the leather, causing it to harden and crack. The iron fittings should occasionally be lightly oiled to prevent rust.

Exercise extra caution when sheathing the weapon into the scabbard. If you own a weapon with a sharp blade, a forceful or careless insertion could slice through the leather from the inside, causing injury or irreversible damage to the product. Also, keep in mind that slight variations in colour and surface texture are a natural characteristic of genuine leather, making every piece a complete original.
