Historical Leather Sword Baldric with Custom-Fitted Scabbard
History and Period Context
Baldrics worn diagonally across the shoulder became particularly popular during the Renaissance and Early Modern periods, heavily featuring in conflicts such as the Thirty Years' War. Soldiers and mercenaries often preferred them over complex belt suspension systems. A baldric allowed for a far superior weight distribution of heavier swords or rapiers across the shoulders and back. Furthermore, suspending the weapon in this manner meant it was much less obstructive to the legs during long marches or whilst executing rapid footwork in a duel.
How to Wear and Adjust
You throw the baldric over your right shoulder so that the scabbard rests naturally on your left hip at the optimum angle for drawing (if you are right-handed). You can easily adjust the length of the sturdy leather strap using the solid brass buckle, ensuring the weapon's hilt sits comfortably at hand. As the scabbard is custom-made, it is essential that you provide the exact measurements of your sword using our measurement form when placing your order.

Leather Care and Maintenance
To ensure this handsome leather piece serves you well for years to come, it requires occasional, simple maintenance. Treat the leather surface periodically with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. This ensures the hide retains its natural suppleness, acquires a degree of water resistance, and does not dry out or crack. Never sheathe your weapon whilst the blade is coated in mud or wet, as this will damage the raw leather interior and cause your blade to rust.
Safety Warnings
Please bear in mind that this scabbard is constructed entirely from leather and does not feature a solid wooden core. If you intend to insert a sharply honed sword, there is a significant risk of the blade slicing through the leather during a clumsy draw, a hasty re-sheathing, or a fall. This could lead to the destruction of the scabbard and, more importantly, severe injury to yourself or others. For carrying sharp weapons, we strongly advise using scabbards constructed with a solid timber core. However, for blunt historical fencing (HEMA) or theatrical combat swords, this leather scabbard is perfectly safe and ideal.
Recommended Accessories
To complement this baldric perfectly, we recommend acquiring an authentic period linen shirt, a wide-brimmed felt hat, and a pair of sturdy leather fencing gloves to truly complete your historical mercenary attire.
