Superior Protection with Italian Design
This breastplate embodies the famous "Milanese style" of armor making. Its design prioritizes function over excessive ornamentation. The smooth, rounded shapes (globose form) were engineered to effectively deflect sword cuts and thrusts, minimizing the impact on the wearer. The cuirass consists of several key elements:
- Main Breastplate: Covers the chest and is shaped for maximum organ protection. The distinctive crossed lines on the upper section mimic the reinforced placard construction of the era.
- Articulated Fauld: The lower part consists of three articulated lames that protect the abdomen and hips without restricting your movement during marching or combat.
- Rolled Edges: The raised and outwardly rolled edges around the neck and armholes serve as stop-ribs, preventing enemy blades from sliding under the armor into vulnerable areas.
Historical Context
In the 15th century, Milanese plate armor represented the pinnacle of European armory. Workshops in Milan, such as the famous Missaglia family, produced armor for nobility and mercenary armies across Europe. Unlike German Gothic armor, which was characterized by sharp edges and fluting, Milanese armor relied on smooth, rounded surfaces to deflect blows. This specific infantry model lacks a lance rest, which is historically accurate for foot soldiers who needed freedom of movement to wield pikes or halberds.
