Appearance and construction

The smooth metal front is convex, with a vertical ridge down the centre. Diagonally patterned borders follow the neckline and arm openings. The lower edge flares outwards. The inside has a black surface, and light-coloured leather straps with buckles are fitted at the rear. This is the front plate of a cuirass, leaving the back open.

Historical inspiration and the name Formigny

The supplied historical attribution places the design among European breastplates of 1400–1500. During the 15th century, the breastplate was an important component of plate armour, protecting the front of the torso. A complete cuirass includes both a breastplate and a backplate, so this front plate alone does not constitute a complete cuirass.

The name Formigny recalls the battle fought in Normandy in 1450, which contributed to the French reconquest of the region. We chose it as a reference to the military world of the 15th century. It does not identify the product as a copy of a particular piece of armour from that battle.

Technical specifications

Putting it on and adjusting the fit

Try the breastplate over a gambeson or suitable padded arming garment. Ask someone to help adjust the rear straps so the plate stays in place without pressing against your neck, underarms or body when sitting. Check that you can raise your arms, bend forwards and breathe freely. Have any alterations to the curvature carried out by an armourer; avoid forceful bending or hammering. Keep the shoulder attachment straps until you have checked the complete assembly. Cutting them off is irreversible.

Care, safety and accessories

Dry the plate after use and apply a thin layer of protective oil to exposed metal surfaces. Avoid coarse abrasives and damp storage. Treat the straps with a suitable leather conditioner and check the buckles and attachments. This breastplate is not suitable as protective armour for buhurt, HMB or Battle of the Nations. Do not regard it as a guarantee of protection in contact fighting.

We recommend a padded arming garment, compatible shoulder plates, neck protection and a helmet based on 15th-century examples. Before attaching other components, check their dimensions, fastening arrangements and freedom of movement together.
