Custom Black Renaissance Leather Scabbard for Rapier or Smallsword
Historical Context and Functional Design
During the 16th and 17th centuries, rapiers and smallswords became an indispensable part of the attire of the nobility, military officers, and wealthy townsmen. These long, slender weapons required adequate protection. Scabbards were made of leather-covered wood or, as in this case, of stiff pressed leather, which provided the weapon with sufficient protection while keeping the weight low. The central ridge on this scabbard not only references period aesthetics but also strengthens the entire structure so that the long casing does not deform.
Custom-Made Exactly for Your Blade
To ensure that the rapier sits perfectly in the scabbard, does not rattle, and does not fall out on its own, the sheath is manufactured using a special method of pressing on a last, exactly according to the dimensions of your weapon. When placing an order, it is therefore absolutely essential to include the following measurements of your blade in the order notes:
- Width of the blade right at the hilt (guard)
- Thickness of the blade right at the hilt (guard)
- Width of the blade at a distance of 10 cm (approx. 4 inches) from the tip
- Thickness of the blade at a distance of 10 cm (approx. 4 inches) from the tip
- Total length of the blade that the scabbard is to protect (the internal depth of the scabbard)

Leather Care and Safety Instructions
Leather is a durable yet still living natural material. To ensure the scabbard retains its strength and protects the blade from rust, we recommend regularly treating it inside and out with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in heavy rain at a historical event, always let the scabbard dry slowly at a normal room temperature. Strictly avoid drying it near an open flame, on a radiator, or in direct sunlight. Intense heat would dry out the leather and damage it irreversibly.
Always exercise extra caution when sheathing the weapon. Rapiers have a very sharp and narrow tip. Forceful or careless insertion of the blade could pierce the leather chape and cause serious injury. Please also bear in mind that slight variations in colour and surface texture compared to the photographs are a natural characteristic of genuine leather, making every manufactured piece a unique original.
Recommended Accessories
To accompany this custom-made scabbard, we highly recommend acquiring a high-quality leather rapier carriage (a baldric or frog), which will allow you to carry the weapon stylishly and safely slung over your shoulder or on your belt, exactly in the spirit of Renaissance fencing masters.
