Crusader Great Helm with Brass Cross (Mid-13th Century)
This type of helmet appeared on battlefields in the early 13th century and remained in use for nearly three centuries, eventually evolving into the jousting "frog-mouth" helm. However, this specific flat-topped model is a pure representative of the High Middle Ages, commonly seen in manuscripts like the Maciejowski Bible or the Codex Manesse.
The helmet is constructed from steel plates approx. 1.6 mm (16 gauge) thick, firmly riveted together. The front is dominated by a brass cross, which serves both as decoration and reinforcement for the facial plate. The fixed, narrow oculars (eye slits) give the wearer a fierce, dehumanized look that was intimidating to enemies. Ventilation holes are historically located on the right side to maintain the structural integrity of the left side, which was most exposed to incoming attacks.
Usage and Safety
The Great Helm was designed to offer maximum protection against crushing blows. Historically, it was always worn over a padded arming cap and often a chainmail coif. We strongly recommend wearing adequate padding underneath to ensure a secure fit and shock absorption.
Safety Warning: This helmet is made of mild steel with a thickness of approx. 1.6 mm (16 gauge). While sturdy, it is classified as "Class C" weapon/armour context—suitable for re-enactment, stage combat, and LARP. It is not certified for full-contact heavy combat (Buhurt, HMB), where thicker steel is typically required.

Care Instructions

- Steel: Not stainless. Wipe dry after use and apply mineral oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). Minor rust can be removed with a fine abrasive pad and oil.
- Brass: May develop a patina over time. Use a brass polish if you prefer a shiny finish.
- The item arrives oiled for protection; wipe it down with a cloth before first use.
My Tip for You: To complete the authentic 13th-century knight look, pair this helmet with a surcoat bearing your heraldry and a full hauberk of mail. The flat top is also perfect for adding a crest or torse, as was common in the period.
