Short Bodkin Arrowhead – Armour Piercing Point

Small but Historically Deadly

Bodkin points are characterized by their square cross-section, resembling a chisel or needle. Unlike broad hunting heads designed to cause massive bleeding, the bodkin focused on penetration. All the kinetic energy of the arrow is concentrated onto a tiny point, allowing it to burst chainmail rings or penetrate thick layers of textile.

This specific model is a shortened version. Short bodkins were often more resistant to bending upon impact with hard obstacles (e.g., plate armour) than their long needle-like counterparts. It is a historical reproduction designed to follow the physical appearance and materials of original medieval pieces.

Installation on the Shaft

The arrowhead features a socket. To install it, you will need to taper the end of your wooden shaft. For a secure bond, we recommend using a suitable adhesive (historically pitch or birch tar, nowadays two-component epoxy glue works well). The inner diameter suggests it fits standard shafts well, likely requiring a slight taper for 5/16" or 11/32" shafts.

Care and Maintenance

The steel is untreated and may have rust or develop it over time.

  • If the point gets wet (e.g., shooting in wet grass), wipe it dry immediately.
  • Regularly treat the metal with mineral or synthetic oil to protect the steel.
  • Due to handcrafted manufacturing methods, roughness and color may vary from piece to piece.

Safety Warning

This is a functional metal arrowhead. Although the source text mentions suitability for LARP, this refers to the visual aspect for your character's quiver or target competitions at events. Shooting these tips at people or animals is extremely dangerous and strictly forbidden in most safety-conscious environments. Use this tip exclusively for shooting at inanimate targets.
