Are you looking for a weapon that combines the aesthetics of the Early Middle Ages with the functionality of later centuries? This Frankish Bastard Sword from the premium brand Urs Velunt is a unique piece that captivates at first glance. It blends the typical "Frankish" disc pommel, known from the time of Charlemagne, with the extended grip and blade of a hand-and-a-half sword. The result is a weapon offering the best of both worlds: the speed of a single-handed sword and the leverage of a two-hander. It is the ideal choice for fencers who want to stand out and are looking for a reliable weapon for training and stage combat. Further product information ...

Frankish Bastard Sword by Urs Velunt: A Steel Fusion of History

Quality Hidden in 1060 Steel

The core of this sword is a blade forged from high-quality 1060 spring steel. This material is prized among fencers for its toughness and ability to withstand impacts without breaking. The blade is hardened to 50–55° HRC, providing an ideal compromise between flexibility and edge hardness. The construction features a "full-tang" design – the tang runs through the entire handle and is securely peened at the end of the massive steel pommel. This ensures the sword won't fall apart even during dynamic fencing.

The grip is made of wood, wrapped in leather, and features distinct ribbing (risers) to ensure a secure and firm hold. Thanks to the grip length, you can wield the sword with one or two hands, giving you a huge tactical advantage. Included is a precisely crafted wooden scabbard with a leather cover and steel fittings, protecting the blade during transport.

Tips for Longevity and Safe Combat

The sword features a blunt edge (approx. 1–1.4 mm) and a rounded safety tip, making it intended for contact fencing. However, keep in mind that even the best steel can be ruined by poor technique. Try to parry strikes with the flat of the blade and avoid forceful "edge-on-edge" clashes. The point of balance at 9.5 cm from the guard gives the sword significant cutting power, which you will appreciate in an offensive fighting style.

1060 steel is not stainless. After every training session, wipe the sword dry with a cloth and apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil) to prevent rusting. If "burrs" (nicks) appear on the edge, file them down with a fine file to avoid injuring your sparring partner.

Such a sword deserves to be carried with dignity. I recommend getting a high-quality leather belt frog, which you can find in our accessories section.
