Synthetic Combination Whetstone – Grit 600/1000 Japanese Style Water Stone

A dull blade is often more dangerous than a sharp one, requiring more force to cut and increasing the risk of slipping. Whether you need to maintain your everyday kitchen knives, sharpen a crafting tool, or restore the edge on a historical replica, this Fudo combination water stone is the professional choice. Manufactured with a synthetic, open-pore structure, it ensures consistent particle distribution and superior sharpening performance. Fudo Synthetic Combination Whetstone – Grit 600/1000 Japanese Style Water Stone

Dual Grit Versatility

This stone combines two essential grit levels in one block, making it a versatile addition to your maintenance kit:

  • 600 Grit (Blue Side): A medium-coarse grit ideal for the initial stage of sharpening. Use this side to remove small nicks, reshape the bevel, or restore the edge on very dull blades.
  • 1000 Grit (White Side): A medium-fine grit designed for the main sharpening phase. It refines the scratches left by the 600 side and puts a keen, workable edge on the blade. It is also suitable for regular maintenance of reasonably sharp knives.

How to Use Your Water Stone

Before you begin, fully submerge the stone in water for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. You will know it is ready when air bubbles stop rising to the surface. The water acts as a lubricant, flushing away metal particles and preventing the stone's pores from clogging. Keep the stone wet by sprinkling water on it during the process. The provided non-slip rubber base ensures stability, allowing you to focus on maintaining the correct angle.

Historical Insight

Since the Stone Age, humans have used abrasive stones to sharpen tools. In historical warfare, the condition of a soldier's blade could mean the difference between life and death. While our ancestors relied on natural stones quarried from the earth—which often had inconsistent veins or hard spots—modern synthetic stones like this Fudo model offer a level of homogeneity that historical swordsmiths would have highly prized. It draws on the Japanese tradition of "Toishi" (water stones), renowned for producing exceptional edges on high-carbon steel.

Care and Maintenance

To prevent cracking, avoid dropping the stone on hard surfaces. After use, rinse off any slurry and allow the stone to air dry completely before storing. Do not expose it to freezing temperatures or extreme heat (like a radiator), as this can damage the binding agent. If the stone develops a "dish" or hollow in the centre after extensive use, it should be flattened using a flattening stone or coarse sandpaper on a flat surface to ensure accurate sharpening.

We recommend pairing this stone with a leather strop for the final polishing stage to achieve a razor-sharp finish.
