Are you looking for reliable head protection that won't obscure your vision or hinder your breathing? This open sallet is the perfect choice for infantrymen, archers, and crossbowmen who need situational awareness on the battlefield. In the 15th century, this helmet style, alongside the kettle hat, spread across Europe as a replacement for the bascinet. Featuring an extended tail and lacking a visor, it offers an excellent compromise between protection and comfort. This replica by Marshal Historical is designed to faithfully serve mercenaries and soldiers in historical re-enactments. Further product information ...

Open Infantry Sallet – 15th Century Standard

This helmet represents the classic "open sallet" design without a visor, favoured for its versatility. The bowl is smooth with a slight central ridge (comb) that improves deflection of overhead strikes. Its defining feature is the elongated back tail, which protects the neck from cuts without restricting head movement. A row of rivets lines the sides to secure the liner. The bottom edge is rolled for added safety and structural rigidity.

This sallet is suitable for:

  • Re-enactment of 14th and 15th-century conflicts (e.g., Wars of the Roses, Burgundian Wars).
  • LARP and cosplay for mercenaries, guards, or foot soldiers.
  • Stage combat and theatrical performances.

Safety Warning: The helmet is made of approx. 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel. While sturdy, it is classified as a standard replica and is not certified for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt (Battle of the Nations). However, it is perfectly adequate for standard historical fencing and re-enactment. For comfortable wear, we recommend using a padded arming cap underneath.

Care Instructions

As the helmet is made of mild steel without a stainless coating, it is susceptible to rust. This is a natural characteristic of the material. To keep it in top condition:

  • Regularly rub the steel with mineral or synthetic oil (e.g., gun oil or WD-40) to protect it.
  • Wipe it dry after every use to prevent corrosion caused by sweat or humidity.
  • Store in a dry place.

My Tip for You: This sallet pairs excellently with a plate bevor (gorget) to protect the throat and chin, creating a complete and historically accurate look for a heavy infantryman.
