Historical Context and Practical Armor Application

In the Middle Ages, leather was one of the most accessible materials for crafting defensive elements. Common foot soldiers, town militias, and archers often wore similarly simple leather guards that could reasonably dampen a blow and protect the arm from injury without restricting mobility. Today, you will perfectly utilise these vambraces at LARP events, during light stage fencing practice, or in traditional archery, where they serve as very robust protection against the bowstring. The guards are secured using strong leather thongs, which you tighten exactly to the circumference of your arm. Because this is light leather armour, please note that for safety reasons, the vambraces are not intended for full-contact heavy combat with steel weapons, such as buhurt (Battle of the Nations) or heavy HEMA fencing. For maximum comfort, prevention of chafing, and better shock absorption, we highly recommend wearing the guards over a linen shirt, a padded arming jack, or a thinner gambeson.

Proper Care for Thick Cowhide

To ensure the thick, smooth cowhide retains its flexibility and long lifespan, it requires regular maintenance. Occasionally treat the vambraces and the leather laces with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. Never wash the product in a washing machine, do not soak it unnecessarily, and do not dry it near an open fire, on a radiator, or in direct summer sunlight. Rapid drying would lead to irreversible hardening and cracking of the natural material. If you get caught in the rain at an event, let the armour dry slowly at standard room temperature.
