Medieval Tooled Leather Vambraces with Buckle Closures
Historical Context and Combat Application
In the Middle Ages, leather forearm guards were an absolutely fundamental and affordable piece of equipment for many foot soldiers, archers, and light cavalrymen. Thick leather could reasonably dampen slashing blows and protect the arm from abrasions in the heat of battle. Today, you will use these sturdy leather arm guards primarily as a striking and fully functional accessory for LARP, cosplay, and light stage fencing. The bracers are placed directly on the forearm and tightened using the leather straps and brass buckles. You can wear them directly on bare skin, but for noticeably greater comfort and better shock absorption, we highly recommend wearing them over a padded gambeson or a thick linen shirt. Please note that due to the thickness of the leather, this is not protective armour suitable for heavy full-contact fencing with steel weapons (HEMA) or force-based combat like buhurt (Battle of the Nations).
Proper Care for Leather Armour
To ensure the leather remains flexible, strong, and retains its attractive appearance for a long time, it requires regular maintenance. It is advisable to treat the vambraces occasionally with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. Never wash the product in a washing machine, do not soak it unnecessarily in water, and do not dry it on a radiator or in close proximity to an open fire. Rapid drying would inevitably lead to the hardening and cracking of the natural material. If your bracers get wet, let them dry slowly and naturally at room temperature.
To create comprehensive and functional hand protection, we recommend purchasing robust leather gloves from our range of historical equipment to accompany these vambraces.
