Decorated Leather Bracer with Embossed Celtic Cross, 1 Piece

Historical Context and Archery Usage

Leather forearm guards have accompanied warriors and hunters throughout history. In archery, they play an absolutely indispensable and highly practical role – they protect the inner side of the forearm from the painful and dangerous slap of the bowstring after releasing an arrow, while simultaneously compressing loose sleeves effectively so the string does not catch on them. In the Middle Ages, light infantrymen and mercenaries also wore similar thick leather cuffs as basic hand protection against edged weapons. The motif of the Celtic cross (a cross with a ring) is among the most prominent symbols of Hiberno-Scottish Christianity, representing the connection between the earthly and heavenly realms, eternity, and steadfast faith.

How to Properly Fit and Lace the Bracer

Fitting the guard is absolutely intuitive and straightforward. Place the bracer on your forearm so that the embossing faces outwards (or for archers, place the smooth side where the bowstring might slap) and the wider edge wraps around your arm closer to the elbow. Gradually thread the leather tie criss-cross through the prepared eyelets exactly as you are used to doing with shoes, and tie it firmly at the end. This proven system allows you to smoothly and firmly regulate the tightness over a thin linen tunic or a thick padded gambeson.

Proper Genuine Leather Care Instructions

This high-quality product is handmade from genuine cowhide leather with an honest thickness of 2.5 mm (approx. 0.10 inches). Minor natural variations in colour and surface texture are characteristic properties of this natural material and make each piece a unique original. To ensure the leather maintains its extreme strength, flexibility, and resistance to sweat and rain over the long term, it requires regular care. We recommend treating the outer surface of the bracer at least once a season with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, hairdryer, the open flames of a campfire), otherwise it could harden and crack.

Crucial Safety Warnings

The bracer is made of high-quality thick leather; however, keep in mind that it is a clothing accessory and a guard designed primarily for archery or light stage fencing. It does not replace steel plate armour under any circumstances. It is not intended for full-contact heavy combat (buhurt) against steel weapons, where the leather could not prevent fractures or severe bruising. Additionally, protect the leather lacing tie from unnecessary friction against sharp weapon edges.

Recommended Accessories

For an absolutely flawless and complete period look, we highly recommend pairing this bracer with our leather archery gloves and arrow quivers from our extensive range of equipment.
