Layered Viking Leather Bracer with Embossed Thor's Hammer, 1 Piece

Mythological Context and Archery Usage

Leather forearm guards have accompanied warriors and hunters throughout history. In archery, the bracer plays an absolutely indispensable and highly practical role – it reliably protects the inner side of the forearm from the painful slap of the bowstring after releasing an arrow, while simultaneously compressing loose tunic sleeves so the string does not catch on them. Moreover, the layered construction made of 3.5 mm (0.14 inches) thick leather provides excellent basic forearm protection during light combat. The motif of Mjölnir, the magical weapon of the thunder god Thor, was among the most popular protective amulets across early medieval Scandinavia, symbolizing strength, protection, and devotion to the old gods.

How to Properly Fit and Lace the Bracer

Fitting the guard is quick and absolutely intuitive. Place the bracer on your forearm so that the layered overlap with the embossing faces outwards (or for archers, place the smooth side directly where the bowstring might slap) and the curved edge allows free movement of the wrist. Gradually thread the leather tie criss-cross through the prepared eyelets exactly as you are used to doing with shoes, and tie it firmly at the end. This proven system allows you to smoothly and firmly regulate the tightness over a thin linen tunic or a thick woollen coat.

Proper Genuine Leather Care Instructions

This high-quality product is handmade from genuine cowhide leather with an honest thickness of 3.5 mm (approx. 0.14 inches). Minor natural variations in colour and surface texture are characteristic properties of this noble material and make each piece a unique original. To ensure the leather maintains its extreme strength, flexibility, and resistance to sweat and rain over the long term, it requires regular care. We recommend treating the outer surface of the bracer at least once a season with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, hairdryer, the open flames of a campfire), otherwise it could harden, become brittle, and crack.

Crucial Safety Warnings

The bracer is made of massive leather; however, keep in mind that it is a clothing accessory and a guard designed primarily for archery or light stage fencing. It does not replace steel plate armour under any circumstances. It is not intended for full-contact heavy combat (buhurt) against steel weapons, where the leather could not prevent fractures or severe bruising. Additionally, protect the leather lacing tie from unnecessary friction against sharp weapon edges.

Recommended Accessories

For an absolutely flawless and complete early medieval look, we highly recommend pairing this bracer with our leather archery gloves, a Viking belt, and an arrow quiver from our extensive range of equipment.
