The Master Deschaux Renaissance Rapier with Polished Bone Grip c. 1590

Construction and Practical Application

This rapier has been constructed with a focus on historical accuracy and durability. The 1065 carbon steel blade is renowned for its flexibility and edge retention. The complex swept hilt and massive pommel are made of polished steel, providing excellent hand protection. The genuine bone grip, adorned with a braided wire wrap, not only looks superb but prevents the weapon from slipping, even when your hands become sweaty during training.

Although this is a technically fully functional weapon with a forged blade, we must advise you of its specific characteristics. The blade is relatively wide and stiff, making it ideal for practicing period techniques and duelling postures. For safety reasons, we do not recommend it for modern sport fencing or high-intensity HEMA sparring. Due to its stiffness, a strong thrust could cause injury to an opponent despite protective gear. It is an ideal piece for collectors, re-enactors, or for solo training and forms.

Historical Context

Around 1590, the development of the rapier reached its zenith. It evolved from a heavy sword into a civilian sidearm for daily wear, designed primarily for the thrust. Rapiers like this were potent symbols of social status. The name Deschaux pays homage to the French tradition of fencing masters who began to emphasise the geometry of movement and speed over brute force. Interestingly, during this period, the rapier was often used in tandem with a left-hand dagger to parry attacks and counter immediately.

Maintenance and Safety Instructions

To ensure this rapier serves you for many years, we recommend wiping the metal parts with a dry cloth after each use and applying a thin layer of gun oil (such as Ballistol). Carbon steel blades are susceptible to corrosion; therefore, never store the rapier in its scabbard if it is damp. The bone grip is a natural material; occasionally wiping it with a soft, dry cloth is sufficient.

Always exercise caution when handling the rapier. Even though the edge is blunt, the point remains very dangerous. Never point the rapier at people or animals unless engaged in controlled training with appropriate safety gear. Do not bend the blade over your knee or use it for prying, as this could lead to permanent deformation or breakage of the steel.

We recommend pairing this rapier with a high-quality leather belt frog and a period-accurate left-hand dagger to complete your Renaissance set.
