A Combination of Wood, Leather, and Steel
This replica is made with an emphasis on a period appearance. The massive wooden shaft features a leather strap wrapping at the bottom, ensuring a firm grip and preventing the weapon from slipping. The upper part of the shaft is reinforced with a leather collar, from which two massive steel chains emerge. Attached to their ends are two heavy metal balls studded with sharp spikes. The metal parts have a dark finish imitating old iron. There is a chain loop at the bottom of the handle, which historically served to hang the weapon from the wrist or a saddle.
History: The Weapon of the Common People
Flails originally emerged from the modification of agricultural threshing tools. In the hands of the Hussites and later German peasants in the 16th century, they became feared weapons. Their main advantage was the ability to "bypass" an opponent's guard – the ball on the chain could swing over a shield and strike the enemy in the helmet or back. The two-ball variant increased the chance of a hit and looked more menacing, although it was more difficult to control. Important Safety Warning and Care
It must be emphasized that this flail is intended exclusively as a decoration. Due to the design (balls on chains), the movement of the weapon is unpredictable. Any attempt at fencing or practice swinging risks serious injury not only to you (from the ball rebounding) but also to people nearby. The material of the spikes is not hardened and could be damaged if it strikes a hard object.
For maintenance, I recommend keeping the metal parts dry and occasionally wiping them with a cloth and a drop of oil to prevent corrosion. The leather on the handle will benefit from beeswax treatment.
