The Weapon That Bypassed Shields

Military flails evolved from ordinary agricultural threshing tools. Their main advantage was that, thanks to the flexible chain, the striking head could fluidly wrap around the edge of an opponent's shield or parrying weapon and strike the target with crushing force. For this reason, they were highly favored by infantrymen, including radical Hussite warriors, who used such percussive weapons to even the odds against heavily armored crusaders.

Construction and Detailed Craftsmanship

The foundation of the weapon is a solid, brown-stained wooden handle with a comfortable diameter of approximately 35 mm, fitting perfectly in the hand. The upper part of the handle is reinforced with steel langets (metal strips) that protected the wood from being severed by an enemy's blade. These strips culminate in a massive ring, from which a strong chain is suspended. At the end of the chain swings an iron striking ball equipped with sharp spikes. All metal parts—the reinforcing langets, the ring, the chain, and the spiked ball itself—feature a blackened surface finish, giving the weapon a dark, worn, and historically authentic appearance.

Safety and Proper Care

This flail is sold exclusively as a decorative item and collector's prop. A weapon with a moving head on a chain is extremely difficult to control, and its trajectory can be highly unpredictable. The weapon is under no circumstances intended for contact combat, combat training, or destruction tests. Swinging the weapon can lead to serious injury to yourself or those around you, or the ball could rebound back at the user. To maintain its authentic appearance and protect it from rust, we recommend regularly wiping all iron parts dry and preserving them with a thin layer of gun oil.

To display this ominous weapon, we recommend getting a forged wall hook or a wooden display plaque. If you plan to use the flail as a costume accessory, a small buckler shield and period leather gauntlets for a more secure grip will complement it perfectly.
