The Weapon That Crushed Plate Armor

As swords gradually lost their effectiveness against the increasingly perfect plate armor of the 14th and 15th centuries, percussive weapons like the mace experienced their golden age. The principle was simple but devastating: the mace did not necessarily have to pierce the armor. Its kinetic energy and concentrated impact crushed the bones beneath the armor, causing severe internal injuries or concussions. The flanged type could further concentrate the force of the blow into a narrow edge, often leading to the denting or breaching of the armor plates.

Construction and Detailed Craftsmanship

This mace is made entirely of steel and immediately catches the eye with its matte blackened finish, which not only gives it an ominous, historically accurate look but also provides basic protection against corrosion. The head consists of six massive, profiled flanges. Each flange is further decorated with an elegant cross-shaped cutout, giving the weapon an unmistakable character. A safe and firm grip is ensured by the deeply ribbed handle. The hand is protected from the top by a steel guard ring (rondel), and the bottom of the grip ends in a flat disc pommel, which prevents the weapon from slipping out of the hand during a powerful swing.

Although the mace is made of solid steel, it is sold primarily as a decorative and collector's item or as an accessory to historical clothing. It is not intended for full-contact combat (HEMA, buhurt), as hard steel-on-steel impacts can cause material wear or injury. Although the blackened surface provides some protection, the steel still requires care. We recommend wiping the weapon dry after every handling or exposure to moisture and treating it with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil (e.g., Ballistol) to prevent the formation of surface rust.
