Gothic Flanged Mace 'Bulava', Battle-Ready

Master of Crushing Armour

This mace is constructed for maximum impact and durability.

The Steel Head

The head is crafted from tough EN45 high-carbon steel. Its design, featuring six sharp, pyramid-shaped flanges, ensures that upon impact, the force is concentrated for maximum effect, regardless of the angle of the blow. The head is firmly mounted on the haft and secured with a transverse steel pin to withstand even the heaviest impacts.

The Haft and Balance

The haft, made from solid Mango wood, is long enough for an effective strike yet allows for comfortable one-handed control. With a total weight of just under 700g, the mace is superbly balanced – light enough for quick handling, but with enough weight in the head for a devastating effect.

Practical Application

This mace is classified as "Battle-Ready" and is intended for practical use in historical combat and reenactment. It is ideal for:

  • Historical Combat: Designed to withstand the rigours of controlled combat against an opponent in armour.
  • Stage Combat and Theatre: Its authentic look and robust construction make it a perfect prop.
  • Costume Accessory: Indispensable for the costume of a knight, man-at-arms, or Eastern European warrior.

Important Notice: Although battle-ready, this mace is designed for striking armoured opponents and other yielding targets within a combat scenario. It is not intended for striking hard, unyielding objects such as trees, rocks, or concrete, which can lead to damage to the weapon.

A Glimpse into History: The Mace, Weapon of Commanders and Foot Soldiers

The mace is one of humanity's oldest weapons, having evolved from a simple club. In the High Middle Ages (12th-14th centuries), the flanged mace became one of the most effective weapons against ever-improving plate armour. Where a sword would glance off, a mace could crush and break. It was a popular weapon for both infantry and cavalry. While simpler versions were used by common soldiers, ornate maces (often called a Bulava) became a symbol of power and rank for military commanders, especially in Eastern Europe.

Interesting Fact: The Knight's Counter-Weapon

The development of the flanged mace was a direct response to the massive proliferation of plate armour on European battlefields. As knightly armour became more resistant to cutting and piercing weapons, armourers and soldiers had to find new ways to defeat it. The answer was concentrated kinetic energy. The individual flanges on the mace head focused the entire force of the blow onto a very small area, which was much more effective at deforming and breaking steel plates than a smooth surface. The mace is thus a perfect example of the medieval arms race.

Safety First

Even though this weapon is "battle-ready," it is still a dangerous object. When using it in any contact scenario, adhere to maximum safety.

  • Always use full and certified protective gear, including a helmet, gauntlets, and body protection.
  • Never use the weapon against an unarmoured or unprepared opponent.
  • Train under the supervision of experienced combatants and always follow the rules of your combat or reenactment group.
  • When not in use, store it in a safe place, out of the reach of children.

Caring for Your Weapon

Proper care will extend the life of your mace. The steel head is made from EN45 high-carbon steel, which is not stainless. Therefore, keep it dry and lightly oil it after each use (e.g., with Ballistol) to prevent rust. Protect the wooden haft from prolonged moisture.
